The Brandywine soccer team finally got in the win column Wednesday.

The Bobcats defeated visiting Bangor 2-0 in non-conference action.

Wednesday’s match started out slow with possession going both ways. Eventually Brandywine settled down, got a feel for the game and started passing around which created chances and tiring out the Bangor defense.

“Our midfield started passing with each other using give and goes and getting the ball to the outside,” Brandywine coach Evan Winkler said. “We were able to keep the ball on their side of the field, which really helped our game.”

The possession game worked in the 27th minute when Brandywine senior Joshua Youngs tapped in a pass across the six yard box from freshman Lucas Bucha.

“We came off a loss last night, so tonight we took a simpler approach and went with the attitude of let’s just play soccer and not worry about stressing ourselves out,” Winkler said. “We wanted to have fun and that really helped us out.”

Brandywine put the game away in the 79th minute when senior Eddy Mugenzi passed the ball to junior Brady Duval, who shot far post in the bottom right corner.

With conference games starting next week in the BCS, Winkler sees the previous defeats and this victory as a tool for the rest of the season.

“We moved some guys around for this game and they got used to those spots,” he said. “Our passing and possession game looked better because those guys started getting comfortable.  We really looked like a full 11 today.”

Brandywine hosts Berrien Springs in its next match Sept. 9.
