Seven massive bridge beams made their way through downtown Niles Tuesday and into the site where workers are building the new Main Street Bridge.

Each beam is approximately 123-feet long and weighs 72 tons.

The remaining 14 beams needed to span the bridge’s two abutments and two piers will be arriving either later this week or early next week.

The beams delivered Tuesday were staged on the abutment on the east side of the St. Joseph River. Beams will also be staged in the construction site on west side.

An engineer with the Michigan Department of Transportation overseeing the $10.6 million project said the beams would remain staged until workers get a special crane needed to place the beams across the bridge, likely on Sept. 10. The crane is so large, a worker said, that it will be delivered by truck in separate sections and constructed on the job site.

Work to replace the bridge began in October. Officials say the bridge will open to traffic by late November or early December.
