Goals, defensive plays and intense physicality highlighted the match between Edwardsburg Eddies and St Joe Monday night.

In a non-conference match, the visiting bears beat the Eddies 4-2.

St. Joe opened up the game controlling possession and hitting the crossbar with a 25 yard shot one minute in.

The two teams went back and froth throughout the first 10 minutes until Edwardsburg forward Jacob Brown managed to get the ball into the St Joe goal area and passed a ball across to Mitchael Evans who put the ball into the top right corner with his left foot.

Four minutes later in the 14th minute St. Joe’s Braeden Lear got behind the Edwardsburg defense and headed in a cross from Erik Shults.

Both teams continued to play physically throughout the first half.  The score could have been 3-1 St. Joe, if not more, at halftime had it not been for goal line clearances by Edwardsburg’s Blake Parsons and Caleb Detweiler and some good saves from goalie Caleb Hansel.

The start of the second half continued with more physical play as Edwardsburg’s Tyler Treat receiving a yellow card.

In the 48th minute, St. Joe’s Devan Handy got behind the Edwardsburg defense and easily slotted the ball through on a breakway. Seven minutes later Treat tied the game up 2-2 on a shot that slipped jut passed the St. Joe keeper in the bottom left hand corner from 18 yards out.

St. Joe scored again in the 65th minute on a through ball to Shults from Joe Kirby and then added another in the 76th minute on a breakaway goal from Anthony Tedesco.

“We lack a little bit of fitness,” Edwardsburg coach Sean Jesse said. “I felt like skill wise we were at their level, but in the end St. Joe just wanted it more than we did. We didn’t finish the way we needed to, we had 5 to 10 minute spans of checking out and they took advantage of it. Practices will have to be more intense. We still have a long season to go.”

In the Junior Varsity match Edwardsburg topped St. Joe 5-0.
