Mt. Calvary Baptist Church is helping Niles end summer vacation on a high note with its annual block party this weekend.

The free community wide celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at 601 Ferry St. in Niles.

The event’s director said the block party is the church’s way of celebrating God, God’s word and God’s love of people.

“We want to show love to all of his people and the people in the community,” said Timothy Wills, adding that more then 400 people attended last year’s event.

In addition to offering free food and beverages, the church will be handing out free book bags and school supplies for elementary, middle and high school students.

The supplies were made available from donor contributions and contributions from the church.

Wills said the church’s food pantry, Helping Hand Ministry, would be open for people needing food and clothing.

The block party will also feature games for adults and children, a disk jockey, live performances and prizes.

“Anyone can show up,” Wills said. “It is a free community event.”
