Published 9:41 am Wednesday, August 26, 2015

Charlotte Custer, of Edwardsburg, is a longtime volunteer at the Niles Salvation Army. She was among the many volunteers who helped distribute backpacks and school supplies to parents and children Tuesday at the Salvation Army, which is located at 424 N. 15th St., Niles.

How many years have you helped out with the Salvation Army’s backpack distribution?

At least five.

How did you get started initially?

I also help at the Christmas giveaway events. I’ve done that probably around seven years. That’s how I heard about the backpack program.

How did you hear about the Salvation Army?

I either saw it in the paper or heard it on the radio that they needed help and I felt it was a really good cause. They help a lot of people and I really enjoy it. It is a highlight for me.

What did you do Tuesday during the backpack giveaway?

I take down the information on the families and send them on to get their backpacks. I do the same for Christmas with the prequalifying for their needs.

Later, once they’ve narrowed all that down and got the names and everything those people come in and physically do their shopping.

I’ve helped in the past with packing the backpacks. They did that last week, but I had a commitment with my grandchildren.

I’ve actually had my grandchildren involved in both of those events where they actually come in and help too. It really is a good thing for them to see that there are children who need and aren’t as fortunate as they are.

What do you like about the backpack program?

There are so many families that don’t have things to give their children to start school and they need that for school. That is the hub of the whole thing. To get ample supplies they need to go in and learn what they need to learn.

Have you helped with backpack distribution in the past? What is that like?

It is pretty cool because it is fun to see the excitement in the kid’s faces and all.

Why is it important to volunteer?

There is a lot of need out there and we all have our place in helping with that need. I just think it (Niles Salvation Army) is a great cause and the people work really hard here.
