A 54-year-old Niles man was found dead in Riverfront Park south of the Broadway Street Bridge in Niles Wednesday afternoon.

Sgt. Scott Swanson, of the Niles Police Department, was the first to arrive on scene after a person mowing grass in the area reported a suspicious male sleeping in the park at approximately 1 p.m.

Swanson said he found an unresponsive male lying face down on the ground in front of a park bench. The subject had no pulse and Swanson said rigor mortis was evident.

“By all accounts it looks to be a natural death,” said Swanson, adding that police were awaiting the arrival of a medical examiner to determine the cause of death.

Swanson said police would not release the name of the deceased until notification of immediate family members.

Swanson said another person saw the man in the park at 2 p.m. Tuesday, meaning he could have been there for around 24 hours.
