Overall attendance was up, but the number of youth exhibitors was down at the Berrien County Youth Fair, which ran Aug. 17-22 in Berrien Springs.

Karen Klug, executive director of the fair, released the following attendance figures:

• Monday, Aug. 17 — 18,848

• Tuesday, Aug. 18 — 22,694

• Wednesday — 15,477

• Thursday — 23,808

• Friday — 23,378

• Saturday — 21,108

• Total — 125,013

Klug said the overall attendance total was up 2,417 from the year before.

While she did not attribute the increase to any one thing, Klug said they benefitted from good weather and attractive grandstand acts.

“We had pretty good weather every day this year,” she said. “Last year on Tuesday, which was kids day, it pretty much rained the entire day. That always has an affect on total attendance.”

Klug said Vince Gill (Thursday), Bullmania (Friday) and Circus Continental (Tuesday) were among the most well attended grandstand acts.

The fair had a total of 2,064 youth exhibitors this year, down 201 from the year before.

“I think there are a whole lot of things kids can be involved in and from year to year it (number of exhibitors) fluctuates,” Klug said.

There was a total of 11,929 exhibits, down 599 from the year prior. Klug said the lack of poultry exhibits accounted for most of the difference.

“We had a really good week,” she said. “I want to give a big thanks to those who came and visited and those who volunteered… we couldn’t do it without their help and dedication.”

The 2016 Berrien County Youth Fair will be held Aug. 15-20. The theme is “Kick Up Your Heels.”
