Unlike past years, Guy Murray didn’t compete in Steve’s Run Saturday.

But he deserves a little credit for helping Patricia Murray finish with the best female time in the 10K run at Southwestern Michigan College.

Patricia is Guy’s wife. Guy, who’s originally from Niles, currently lives with his family in Redford, Michigan.
Patricia was joined by her 14-year old daughter (Kaitlin), eight-year old son (Colin) and nephew (Leo) in Saturday’s race.

“His hype about it,” Patricia said about what motivated her to run the race. “My husband was just a spectator today.”
The 44-year old Murray finished with a time of 44:56. I thought I did pretty well.”

Running is a big part of Murray’s life as she has run in nine marathons in her lifetime. She has also done a lot of trail running in local parks back home.

Carmel, Indiana product Ben Veatch was the top overall finish in the 10K with a time of 33:30. Veatch, who will be a senior this coming fall at Carmel High School, was participating in Steve’s Run for the third time. He ran the 5K two years ago and finished fourth and he ran the 10K last year and finished second.

“I’m in better shape then I was a year ago,” Veatch said. “I’m bigger and stronger. I’m just preparing for the upcoming cross country season. This is a great event. It’s also my workout day today and this is like a six-mile tempo run.”

Ben’s father Craig was looking up road races a few years ago and found Steve’s Run, which was a perfect event to compete in while the family was vacationing at their lake house in South Haven during the summer.
Last year, Veatch placed first at the state finals in cross country and finished first at the track state finals in the 3,200 meters.

In the 5K run, David Jones from Constantine was the overall winner with a time of 17:07. Jones was also running in the event for the third time. He finished fourth last year and 12th two years ago in the 5K.

The 19-year old Jones noticed a difference running at Southwestern Michigan College compared to running the previous two years through downtown Dowagiac.

“It’s a lot hillier with a lot more dirt,” Jones said. “My traction wasn’t as good with all the dirt. There were also a lot more sharp turns. I liked running in town a little bit more, but it was fine running here. The weather was great today. It wasn’t too sunny or too cloudy.”

The female winner in the 5K was 15-year old Dorcas Wingard from Topeka, Indiana. Wingard, who finished with a time of 22:15, has been running competitively since she was 13 years old. She has run a marathon in Indianapolis.

“I enjoy running,” Wingard said.  “I really didn’t come to win today. I didn’t expect to win.”
Atlee Lambright, Dorcas’ uncle, introduced his niece to Steve’s Run. Atlee has competed in the 5K and 10K.
“He ran with me today,” Wingard said about her uncle. “He was my pacer. There were four girls in front of me and my uncle told me to try to keep up with team and I got them at the end. It was really fun. I really liked the trail. It’s a great course.”

Michael Shields of Dowagiac won the 5K walk with a time of 38:17, while Vicki Polmateer of Jones was the women’s 5K walk winner with a time of 24:02.

The run, which took place for the 41st time on Saturday, is held in honor of Steven Briegel, the son of former Southwestern Michigan College President David Briegel, who died of cancer at 22 years old in 1990.

All proceeds are split equally between the Steven Briegel Scholarship and the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center for cancer research.
