NILES, Mich. — For decades the city of Niles has celebrated the river that ties the community to the rest of Michiana, and this year is no different. However, event planners have worked to revamp the summer festival, making it what they believe will be bigger and better than ever.

On Aug. 1 and 2, Niles will be introduced to the inaugural Trails and Ales Festivus.

The new “festivus” replaces the former Niles Riverfest, which was a family festival favorite for more than 20 years in Niles. The Niles Park Board has taken on the planning of the new festivus.

They are offering a full variety of new attractions for the visitors to enjoy while keeping old favorites, such as the dragon boat races, car show and array of live music that typically fills the amphitheater at Riverfront Park.

The first new attraction, a barbecue contest, is hoped to be an instant favorite among visitors. To complement the food, the Four Flags Chamber of Commerce will set up a craft beer and wine tent with offerings coming from many local breweries and wineries.

Those wishing to get some exercise in friendly competition have the opportunity to participate in a volleyball tournament, a corn hole tournament, a pickleball tournament and a two-day Michigan Momentum team softball tournament.

The river is also going to be the location of a new team fishing contest, which has 100 percent cash prize payouts.

For the youngest visitors, there will be a YMCA Daytime Park, as well as a bounce house.

As always, the St. Joseph River offers not only its beauty to the entire park setting, but also a five-mile walking trail that inspires the “Trails” part of the festival’s new name.

There will be an arts and crafts show with strictly handmade items. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the works of many local artisans and purchase their artwork.

All events and parking are free. A detailed listing of events and times can be found at nilestrailsandales.com
