Visitors to Dowagiac’s North Wayne Mennonite Church are encouraged to arrive in style this Sunday — be that in a vintage sports car, tractor or golf cart.

The church is hosting their second annual “Cruise In” event that morning, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. Church members and visitors can drive into the church, located at 27285 Corwin St. north of the city limits, in whatever vehicle they choose.

“It’s a community event,” said organizer Shirl Bontrager. “It’s a chance to let people know where our church is, and to cruise in and spend the day with us.”

Registration for the show begins at 8:30 a.m., with free coffee and donuts offered to visitors. Worship service follows at 9:30 a.m., which will conclude at around 11 a.m., Bontrager said.

“After the church service, people can walk around, look around and check out the vehicles parked out front,”
she said.

The church will be serving grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as sides and soft serve ice cream during the show. Games for kids as well as door prizes for people showing off their vehicles will be offered the afternoon as well.

The church first held the event last year on Father’s Day, with around eight or nine people bringing in their unique rides that morning. A semi, tractor, ATV and even a horse were among the methods of transportation on display that day, Bontrager said.

The church has decided to expand the show this year, adding the cookout portion and moving it to July.

“Hopefully we’ll have a bigger group this year,” Bontrager said. “We’re hoping for 150 people to come out and visit.”

Registration for the event is free, and participation is open to all. People with questions about the event can call Bontrager at (269) 782-8509.
