Two people were injured following an automobile accident that occurred at an intersection in Jefferson Township Saturday night, according to news release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, deputies with the department were dispatched to a crash that occurred around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Daily Road and Pine Lake Street outside of Edwardsburg. The accident occurred when a vehicle, operated by 19-year-old Claire Wendlandt, of Minnesota, failed to yield the right of way at the intersection while heading eastbound on Pine Lake, proceeding into the road and colliding with a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Ronald Pickens, of Edwardsburg, who was heading northbound on Daily.

Two of Wendlandt’s seven passengers were injured as a result of the accident. 20-year-old Toby Gillett, of the United Kingdom, and 19-year-old Steven Thompson, of Scotland, were transported to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac for treatment.

No one inside Pickens’ vehicle was hurt, and all parties were wearing their seatbelts at the time; only front seat occupants of the other vehicle were wearing safety restraints.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the accident. The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting deputies were officers with the Michigan State Police and crews with Edwardsburg Fire and Life Care Ambulance.
