A Dowagiac man was hospitalized in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 13 after being assaulted with a box cutter.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department was called to a home on M-62 in Silver Creek Township at 1:16 a.m. after a report of felonious assault had been made, Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood said in a release Saturday.

Underwood said when police arrived at the scene, they discovered that Joey McGauvran, 29, of Dowagiac, had sustained multiple lacerations from an edged weapon. McGauvran told deputies that a 24-year-old male, whose name is being withheld pending formal arraignment, attacked him with a box cutter.

After deputies completed their initial investigation, the suspect was arrested and is being lodged in the Cass County Jail.

Pride Care Ambulance Service transported McGauvran to Borgess-Lee Hospital in Dowagiac for treatment.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Dowagiac Police Dept., Pokagon Tribal Police Dept., and Pride Care Ambulance.

The case remains under investigation at this time.
