The Cassopolis Board of Education received good news about the 2014-15 budget at its regular meeting Monday night.

The board reviewed the budget and found out that as of right now it is expected to finish the year with a $1.3 million fund balance.

Cassopolis finished with a $950,000 fund balance at the end of the 2013-14 school year last June.

Originally, the district was projecting that it would break even this year.

Cassopolis has projected revenues of $9.6 million and projected expenditures of $9.2 million for the 2014-15 school year.

The district will firm up its numbers at its regular June 22 meeting.

Not all the news was good, however.

The 2015-16 budget is projecting a loss of approximately $283,000.

Most of that loss comes from a projected drop in enrollment of 40 students.

According to current state figures, the loss of those students would amount to approximately $285,000.

Cassopolis is also expecting to borrow $1 million or less from the state to cover its expenditures until the state aid is received in the fall.

In past years, the district had borrowed betwen $1.3 and $1.7 million from the state.

The board also:

• Honored the robotics team, middle school math team, Sam Adams history team and reviewed the year in sports.

• Heard about the advance art class’s trip to Chicago.

• Approved the early release schedule for 2015-16. Students will be released 90 minutes early the second Wednesday of each month beginning in October so that the staff may work on school improvements.
