Several Edwardsburg Lions Club members made a trip to Crystal Springs Camp and Retreat Center in Dowagiac to tear down and build a brand new bridge that was very much needed.

One of the projects that the Lions of Michigan is very proud of is “Camp Leo,” a four-day camp for “Special Needs Children.”

“Every year the kids get so excited about going to camp that many of them have their bags packed weeks and even months before to go see their friends again at the camp,” Lions Club President Tanda Stiffler said. “For the kids it’s a lot of fun, friendships, personal growth and independence.”

Camp Leo has been held at Crystal Springs Camp for the last few years, which is along the Dowagiac River in a peaceful atmosphere for groups up to 40 guests can come and stay in cabins nestled in the wooded area.

Lions members fundraise to support Camp Leo and each year the Lion Clubs of District 11 B2 and Leos participate at the annual circus night by taking fun games to play and lots of prizes for these kids. A meal is always prepared and the highlight of the evening is watching the children perform in a talent show of singing and dancing.

The Edwardsburg Lions Club made the new bridge much wider so that motorized wheelchairs and mowers can get on the other side of the stream closer to the water.

“It’s all about making memories for these young kids in a safe, fun, caring environment,” Stiffler said.

This year Camp Leo will be July 26-29. Families will bring their kids on Sunday and they go home on Wednesday with great experiences and memories.

The Camp Leo project has been strong for over 35 years with the support of all the Lion Clubs of Michigan.  The Edwardsburg members are proud to make the bridge a safe and reliable path for the kids to get to the water for swimming and water games.
