There were 14 errors committed in Tuesday’s high school baseball game between Brandywine and Centreville.

But mistakes hurt the third-ranked (Division III) Bobcats more as the Bulldogs held off Brandywine, 11-7, in the BCS Athletic Conference crossover game.

Only two of Centreville’s runs were earned, while Brandywine scored three unearned runs. Both teams had seven errors.

“We just didn’t play good defense,” Brandywine baseball coach Dave Sidenbender said. “I thought we pitched well enough and we scored enough runs.”

Brandywine jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning with Joey Covyeau’s two-run single being the big hit.

The next seven runs of the game were scored by Centreville, including five in the second inning. Michael Kool hit a two-run homer and Jalen Brown added a two-run double in the second for the Bulldogs.

Colin Kirby’s two-run single gave Centreville a 10-4 lead in the sixth inning.

Brandywine made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three runs. Hunter Janowiak hit a two-run homer and Toby Fox added an RBI single in the sixth.

Trailing 11-7 entering the bottom of the seventh, Brandywine had runners on second and third with no outs after Ashton Kwieran and Covyeau reached on singles. A Centreville error allowed Covyeau to reach second on his hit.

But the Bobcats were unable to score as Centreville pitcher Michael Kool got two strikeouts and a fly-out to end the game.

“We had opportunities,” Sidenbender said.
