‘Yo’ Fun N’ Run to promote fun and fitness

Published 4:30 pm Tuesday, May 12, 2015

It is difficult to describe the “YO” Fun N’ Run in a single sentence.

That’s because the inaugural Niles event is offering many activities fit for the whole family from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Plym Park.

The main attraction is a half-mile fun run that challenges participants to conquer four unique obstacles:

• Tire trek

• Maze zone

• Hay stacks/hay bales

• “Wall of trouble”

Participants can tackle this course at any time from 9 to 11 a.m., as organizers will be sending runners off in separate heats.

The cost is $20 per person, or $60 for a group of four. Additional group members can join for $20.

The entry price also allows people to participate in a variety of field events after the race, including:

• Ball toss

• Bocce ball throw

• Broad jump

• 40-yard dash

• Jump rope

• Hoola hoop

• Football throw

• Cornhole toss

• Log/beam walk

• Bowling bash

Participants will use a raffle ticket and score sheet for each field event for a chance to win one of several prizes ranging from short-term YMCA memberships to hula hoops.

Prizes will be awarded for:

• Greatest number of family members registered

• Greatest age span in a family

• Youngest participant

• Oldest participant

The event is a being put on by the Niles-Buchanan YMCA, the Niles Noon Optimist Club and Niles New Tech.

The Optimist Club is selling tickets for Nelson’s Port-a-Pit Chicken at $8.50 a person. The price includes chicken, potatoes and bottled water. Proceeds raised will help the service club support youth in the Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan communities.

Tickets can be purchased at the event or ahead of time from any Optimist Club member, at Greater Niles Community Federal Credit Union or Leader Publications.

A fruit and yogurt table will be available from the Niles Elks Club.
