Chamber President Tyanna Weller said Hutchison oversaw the planning and construction of the plaza, which had its grand opening in 1984. She has been in the role ever since.

“Thank you for all you’ve done over the years,” Weller told Hutchison.

Hutchison said she had three main goals as director: Follow HUD regulations, maintain the building for its sponsor — the chamber of commerce — and make sure the building reflects the beauty of Niles so that it is something the city can be proud of.

“Hopefully it will always continue to do so,” she said. “I thank you very much. This is quite an honor.”

The lifetime achievement award would have been presented to Hutchison at the chamber’s awards dinner last month, but Hutchison could not make it due to an illness.

Her sons, Mike and Mark Johnson, accepted the award on her behalf that night.
