Niles girls soccer coach Jo Schau is looking for answers to help cure her team’s problems.

On Friday, St. Joseph needed only a half to post an 8-0 mercy-rule win over the Vikings.

“The wheels on the bus are really falling off,” said Schau, whose team fell to 2-11. “It’s tough when you give up that many shots in a game. Somebody needs to step up. All in all we keep getting pushed around and getting pushed off the ball.”

The Bears, who outshot the Vikings, 19-1, got a goal from Brittany Ackerman nine minutes into the game and Niles struggled defensively the rest of the way.

Also scoring for St. Joseph were Alyssa Berry, Hayden Prillwitz, Sarah Corbe, Jain Shivani, Audrey Filippo, Abigail Tschetter and Emma Vaughn. Vaughn’s goal ended the game with :04 left in the first half.

Bailee Kessler started in goal for Niles. Emily Casey replaced her with 28:00 left in the first half. Kessler came back in again and played the rest of the way.

Schau is looking for some consistency out of the goalie postion. She knows what it takes to be successful as a keeper. Schau was an All-State goalie at St. Joseph and she played goalie in college at Saint Mary’s in South Bend.

“We started out strong at that postion at the beginning of the year,” Schau said. “We had a good competition going. Now its kind simmered down and neither one of our goalies really want to take that step forward. You feel for them. It’s painful. But, coming from playing that position you’ve got to step up. It’s start there. If you don’t quit (as a goalie)and fight for every ball then momentum spreads throughout your entire team.”
