A strong finish helped the Brandywine boys track team prevail over Mendon, 72-65, in a dual meet on Wednesday.

James Harrell’s first place finish in the 3,200-meter run (10:55.95) gave the Bobcats a 67-65 lead. Brandywine sealed the win by getting a first place showing from its 1,600-meter relay team of Dayan Schau, Andrew Boocher, Matt Kline and Andrew Duckett (3:53.88).

“Looking at Mendon’s time we knew it was going to be a close meet,” said Brandywine track coach Terry Borr. “But the main thing is that we came to compete. We always want our 4×4 team to do the best that they can do because a lot of meets come down to that event. Over the years, I can think of a lot of meets where we had to win the 4×4 to win the meet. Tonight we had to do that and our two-miler had to win. We’re pretty happy.”

Duckett was a triple winner as he also placed first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.58) and 300-meter hurdles (41.38).

Double winners for the Brandywine boys team were Matt Kline (1,600-meter relay and 400 meters-54.96) and Andrew Boocher (1,600-meter relay and 800 meters-2:17.58).

Finishing first in an individual boys event for the Bobcats were Harrell (3,200), Tyler VanLaecke (100-12.20), Jake Szilagyi (discus-100-9) and Blake Lerner (long jump-19-7).

“VanLaecke has improved a lot and it has happened because of his hard work,” Borr said.

In the girls meet, Mendon beat Brandywine, 96.5-26.5.

Emiy Pedzinski was a double winner for the Brandywine girls team (800-2:35.50 and high jump-4-8). Pedzinski was also part of the 1,600-meter relay team that ran alone and finished with a time of 5:17.99.

Freshman Jamie Yike was part of that 1,600-meter relay team and was also part of the second place 400-meter relay team (1:01.68) and she finished second in the 100 meters (15.29).

“Freshman Jamie Yike has come out for track and really worked hard and had some success,” Borr said. “I’m pretty proud of her.”
