It didn’t take long Tuesday for the Edwardsburg girls tennis team to pick up another win.

The Eddies improved to 6-0-1 after beating Niles, 8-0.

Edwardsburg clinched the match with a 5-0 lead after Malory VanOverberghe and Zoe Laubach beat Claire Prillwitz and Hannah Hill, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.

“Niles is always a competitve team and I really respect (Niles coach) Jill (Weber) and her girls,” said Edwardsburg girls tennis coach Kim Bartz. “I feel really honored that we could come in and beat them.”

The best match came at No. 1 singles where Shania Ahmed outlasted Maggie Feifar, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

“She has a lot of heart,” Bartz said about Ahmed. “She’s young and only a sophomore. It’s a learning process for her. She continues to learn from every match she plays in and, hopefully, she keeps progressing.”

Weber liked what she saw from her No. 1 singles player

“We scrimmaged them in the beginning of the year,” said Weber. “It was Maggie’s first ever single match. She’s been a doubles player for me. I feel like she’s improved so much since the beginning of the year.”

Weber is coaching a team that has players in different flights this year.

“We had a really good win (Monday) against Mishawaka, 4-1,” Weber said. “We’re building. I feel like we’re improving each and every week. I just wish there were more than three weeks left.”
