The badge of the late Gary McGrew was presented to his wife, Village Council President Dianna McGrew, at the council’s regular board meeting Monday night.

McGrew, who volunteered for 30 years on the police force, passed away on Feb. 25.

Police Chief Frank Williams presented the badge, prefaced by a slideshow of McGrew at work and a small speech.

“I couldn’t ask for a more dedicated person,” Williams said. “He’s put so much into the police department; it’s unbelievable. I got to spend 30 years with him and it was just enjoyable. I will totally miss him. He was an asset to us.”

Chief Williams also announced that McGrew’s son, Jeff McGrew, will take his father’s place as firearms instructor.

Earth Day designated as Community Clean-Up Day

The council approved a measure to designate Earth Day as Community Clean Up Day every year beginning with this year.

On Clean Up Day, residents may put large items or excess garbage by the curb for the village to pick up free of charge. Furniture and appliances can be discarded as long as they can be lifted by two men. No tires, paint, toxic materials, refrigerators or air conditioners made prior to 2012 will be collected.

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22.

The village also set July 11 as Sidewalk Days to coincide with the Underground Railroad Days and the alumni football game at the high school.
