A Cassopolis man reported missing since last week was found by authorities alive and well by authorities Tuesday morning, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Kurt DeYoung, 46, was discovered by police around 11 a.m. that morning on the shore of Diamond Island, located in Cassopolis’ Diamond Lake. Authorities had been searching for the man since last weekend, after receiving a report that he had been missing since embarking on a fishing excursion on the lake last Wednesday.

According to a statement DeYoung gave police, he was fishing out on the lake that day when the motor on his pontoon boat stopped working. He stayed inside the inoperative boat until it drifted onto the nearby island, where police recovered it, abandoned, on Saturday.

With his cell phone dead, DeYoung decided to get out of the cold, finding a residence with an open door to stay in, the man said. He claimed to police to have no memory of what happened after taking shelter.

Police had searched island homes during their investigation into the disaperance on Saturday and Sunday, and found them all to be secured, including the one DeYoung said he was staying inside, the sheriff’s office said.

When initially discovered by authorities Tuesday, DeYoung was found to be incoherent, and was transported to Niles for treatment. Police said that the man had not had a chance to receive any of his prescribed medications since Wednesday

This case remains under investigation.
