Two basketball teams from Southside School scored big during a Special Olympics competition last month in Rockford.

Southside teacher Ken Fetke, who coaches both teams with James Rose, said the Southside Cobras won the gold medal at the state finals in Division 9 (one of the lower brackets) and the Southside Vipers won the bronze medal in Division 1 (one of the higher brackets). The event was held March 27-28.

“Both teams worked hard all year to get to the finals and all the students and staff at Southside are very proud of them all,” Fetke said. “It was a pleasure to coach all the students this year.

“We would also like to thank Sheila Crandall and Joanne Pollitt for helping throughout the season.”

Both teams qualified for the state finals by winning games during a district competition March 7 in Caledonia.

In addition to playing basketball, the teams enjoyed a pizza dinner and dance at Rockford High School.

Fetke said the school has performed well at the state finals in the past with the Cobras winning gold in 2006 and the Vipers winning gold in 2011.
