What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library will offer the following free events and activities this week, and no library card is needed to participate in any program.

Monday, April 13

• 4 p.m. — Friends of the Niles District Library meeting

 

Tuesday, April 14

• 10 a.m. — The Connection (Emergency Shelter Services)

The connection is the fruition of grassroots efforts to implement the Housing Resource Network’s 10-year plan to end homelessness in Berrien County. Housed at the Mercy Center in Benton Harbor, this program of Emergency Shelter Services is a one-stop shop for help when housing is threatened or just for referrals and information.

• 4:30 p.m. — VITA (tax prep assistance) program

• 6:30 p.m. — Fiction For Foodies

Sign up at the information desk. The book list is attached. Read the book, bring food inspired by it, and join us to eat and discuss monthly on the second Tuesday of the month.

• 10:30 a.m. — Pajama Story time

This story time is for the entire family. It will feature stories, color song, magic box, a song with instruments and a coloring sheet to take home. Take home a craft and wear pajamas.

 

Wednesday,April 15

• 10 a.m. — Stress Management 101 by Lakeland Health

Stress Management 101: This presentation will help participants identify the stressors in their lives and learn how they affect the physical, social, mental and emotional areas of their health. Practical solutions for reducing or managing stress will be discussed. It is presented by Lakeland Health Department of Community Health and Wellness.

• Multiple times – Story time day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months-3 years) at 10 a.m., Storytime at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and Squigglers (3-5 years) at 11 a.m.

• 2 p.m. — Special Edition: Zumba Dance Party with the YMCA

All ages and abilities are welcome at this fun, dance party.

• 5 p.m. — Writing Group

The Writing Group is a place for passionate writers to share their ideas and experiences with writing of all types with other passionate writers. All participants will have a chance to share their work and receive constructive criticism and tips for their writing.

• 6:30 p.m. — Readers Circle Book Group

Books are available at the info desk. New members welcome.

 

Thursday, April 16

• 1 p.m. — Securing Change: Organizing Financial Paperwork

Back by popular demand, Chemical Bank will be here to help attendees find some order and peace.

• 1 p.m. — American Mahjong

• 2:30 p.m. — Storytime

• 4 p.m. — Teen Movie Night

Come for movies and popcorn.

• 5:30 p.m. — Storytime

• 6 p.m. — Knitting Group

• 6 p.m. — Building Self Empowerment Workshop

Diana Smuda’s “Building Self Empowerment” workshop will offer information, tips, tools and techniques to help guide people in living an authentic, confident and joyful life. The workshop is interactive.

• 6 p.m. — IEP Presentation Part 2

This program is taught by The Michigan Alliance For Families. Learn how to improve the quality of your contributions to your child’s IEP and increase your effectiveness to address concerns using the IEP process. Bring your child’s IEP to the class and the instructor will help you understand the PLAAFP statement and its importance, the goals and objectives and how to monitor your child’s progress, your child’s accommodations or modifications, and special education supports and services your child is receiving. If you need accommodations or materials in an alternative format, please let them know one week before the workshop. Friday, April 17

Bring yarn or a sewing project and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while chatting and working. Rookies are welcome, and there is a teacher and a few loaner tools to get people started.

• 4:30 p.m. — “Friends Only” Book Sale

This sale is just for Friends of the Niles District Library. Not a member? Ask for an application.

 

Saturday, April 18

• 10 a.m. — Chess Club

• 10 a.m. — Niles District Library Comic Con 2015

Join the library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 18, for the event of the year. The Niles District Library Comic Con is a fun, free to attend event for the whole family to enjoy. Throughout the day, there will be a number of vendors and private collectors selling comics and collectibles. There will also be cartoonists, comic writers, illustrators and creators, authors, 3D artists, film producers, sound producers. There will be movies, video games, RPGs, and tabletop game stations. Prizes will be handed out.

• 11 a.m. — Pop-up Library

Do you live in Niles Township? Is it too hard for you get to the library? The library is test-driving a plan to come to you. The library will be at Rural King every other Saturday through April, offering books that can be borrowed without a card, issuing library cards, delivering books put on hold through the website, and accepting book returns and donations of recent books in excellent condition.

• Noon — National Library Week Book Sale

Join the library for the Friends of NDL annual National Library Week Book Sale. It is open to all.

• 1:30 p.m. — Genreflecting Book Club: Graphic Novels

This is a different kind of book club where members choose the book they want to read from a chosen genre.
