Brandywine baseball splits with Berrien Springs

BERRIEN SPRINGS — Visiting Brandywine opened its 2015 season with a split against Berrien Springs in non-league baseball Wednesday.

The Shamrocks won the first game 3-2 with a three-run seventh inning.

The Bobcats took the nightcap 10-3 in five innings. The second game was shortened by darkness.

In the opener, Berrien Springs took the lead in the seventh inning and Bobcats was unable to muster a comeback.

The Bobcats were led by Chandler Plew’s hitting. Plew went 2-for-3 and scored a run. He singled in the first and third innings.

Brian Shembarger recorded the win for the Shamrocks. He allowed one run over three innings. Shembarger struck out four, walked none and gave up two hits.

Toby Fox was charged with the loss. He lasted just five innings, walked two, struck out six and allowed three runs.

Brandywine (1-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Plew singled to ignite the Bobcats’ offense. A stolen base then moved Plew from first to second.

Berrien Springs went up for good in the seventh, scoring three runs on a two-run double by Brian Engler and two singles.

In the nightcap, the Bobcats scored five runs in the fourth on an error, a walk by Brady Duval, a two-run double by Jeshua Wiese and a sacrifice fly by Seth Brown.

In the third inning, the Bobcats scored on an RBI double by Brown off Tannor Rago, scoring Cole Searles.

Tanner Bourdon went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate for Brandywine. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the fourth inning.

Searles got the win for the Bobcats. He tossed three innings of shutout ball. He struck out five, walked one and surrendered two hits.

Chase Covert was charged with the loss. He lasted just 1 1/3 innings, walked one, struck out one and allowed two runs.

In the top of the first, Brandywine grabbed the early lead, 2-0. The Bobcats’ threat began with a single by Plew. More runs came home for when Plew scored on a groundout by Toby Fox.

After a quick strike from Brandywine, Berrien Springs responded with two runs in the first. The Shamrocks scored on a two-run single by Robert Johnson.
