Those looking for an affordable space to host a birthday party, wedding reception or any other event now have a new option in Niles.

Last month, Milton Township opened up its 2,300-square-foot Great Hall for rentals. With a vaulted ceiling and the capacity to hold nearly 300 people, township officials say it is a great option for almost any gathering.

“We designed this building with this feature for the residents,” said Township Supervisor Robert Benjamin. “I really envisioned this as being a place for the residents.”

The cost to rent the Great Hall for one to four hours is $300 and $50 more for each additional hour. Milton Township residents get a $50 discount off the rate.

The hall is available from 9 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.

A $200 security deposit is required.

Benjamin said Milton Township opened its new town hall in October hoping that residents would be able to make use of the Great Hall, which doubles as a place that can be used during a disaster.

Township officials originally projected to rent out the Great Hall five times in the first year. So far, they’ve had one rental and commitments for five more.

“It is really surprising us,” Benjamin said.

Administrative Assistant Cori Buchar said a family rented out the Great Hall for a child’s birthday party last month.

“They loved it. They loved the space, they loved the beauty of the room,” she said. “The playground (next to the town hall) was a big hit.”

The township is also renting out a conference room that can hold a maximum of 19 people. It is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost is $50 for a two-hour block. Milton Township residents get a free two-hour block per month.

Revenue generated from rentals will be used to pay down the capital improvement loan the township used to build the structure.

No alcohol is allowed on township properties, including during rentals.
