EDWARSBURG — There were plenty of individual standouts Wednesday for the Edwardsburg baseball team in its 11-0 win over Cassopolis.

The game was the season-opener for each team.

Winning pitcher Dalton Raymond, who has signed to play baseball next year at Spring Arbor University, allowed no hits and struck out seven over three innings. Reliever Joe Rabb gave up one hit and struck out five over two innings.

“My pitchers did a good job of throwing strikes,” Edwardsburg baseball coach A.J. Gaideski said. “Both were on a 50-pitch count. (Raymond) also had a long basketball season so he didn’t get the chance to get a lot of (baseball) work in.”

Offensively, Jesse Reinebold collected three hits and three RBIs, Damion Pompey had three singles and Ben Robertson had two hits and an RBI.

Gaideski expects Pompey and Reinebold to provide a spark throughout the year batting No. 1 and 2 in the batting order.

“They’re both very, very good ball players,” Gaideski said. “They do a great job of moving the ball when they’re up at the plate. They know the game very well. We’re expecting good things from them and for the whole team.”

Edwardsburg scored seven runs on five hits in the second inning. Reinebold had a two-run double in the inning. Only three of the runs were earned as Cassopolis committed two errors in the inning.

“We had one bad inning and it really cost us,” first-year Cassopolis baseball coach Andy Brawley said. “(Edwardsburg) bunted and we’ve got to be able to pick it up and throw to first.

“I also didn’t think they were going to be able to run as well as they did. That put a lot of pressure on us.”

Raymond’s two-run double highlighted a four-run fourth inning for the Eddies.
