Q&A: Emily Gaines

Emily Gaines, a sophomore at Niles, scored a goal in the Vikings’ season-opening victory over Dowagiac Wednesday.

She is the focus of the Athlete Showcase this week.

What school do you attend?

EG: Niles

What has been one of your biggest disappointments as an athlete?

EG: Losing our first district game this year to Lakeshore.

What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as an athlete?

EG: All-conference honorable mention this year and last year for basketball.

What has been a hardship in your life?

EG: Being away from my sister at college.

Who is a “hero” in your life and why?

EG: My mom, because she does so much for me and loves me even when I don’t deserve it.

When are you the most nervous while you are competing?

EG: Closing games or districts.

Describe an embarrassing athletic moment.

EG: In my first varsity soccer game, I tripped over the ball right in front of the fans.

How do you tend to workout/train when by yourself?

EG: I got to the “Y” and run and work out on the machines. I also practice my shooting.

What other sport would you like to compete in if you were not playing yours?

EG: I would probably play tennis if I didn’t play soccer.

Who would you say is your “biggest fan?” Why?

EG: My grandma or my family because they are at almost every game.

How would you give away $50,000?

EG: I would give some to my parents so they can retire and go on a vacation.

If you could be the head coach of a team for a year, what team would you choose?

EG: The Golden State Warriors.

If I did not play sports, I would…?

EG: Hang out more with my family and friends.

What is the most challenging thing for you to do in your sport?

EG: Saying goodbye to the seniors.

If you could change one rule about your sport, what would it be?

EG: You only get four fouls for basketball.

What is the best compliment you have ever received?

EG: When my parents told me they were proud of me.

What was the scariest thing you have had to do? Are you glad you did it?

EG: Having to take the last shot in a game. Yes, I was because I missed, but we still won.

What was the last thing you saw someone do that really impressed you?

EG: Brandywine girls winning regionals.

What is your favorite hobby? Why?

EG: Playing sports because I really enjoy it and most of my friends also play.
