The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is seeking the man authorities believe is responsible for the attempted murder of a Niles woman Sunday afternoon.

According to a press release issued by the sheriff’s department, the 24-year-old woman was allegedly shot by her boyfriend, Michael Jerome Exom III, at Aaron’s Mini-Storage at 2:56 p.m. Police and a K-9 unit were dispatched to the scene on North Fifth Street, but Exom had already fled.

According to the release, the initial investigation indicates that the victim — whose name is not being released — and Exom were involved in a domestic argument at the storage facility. Exom then allegedly produced a handgun and shot the victim before fleeing from the scene.

The victim was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by SMCAS Ambulance personnel where she is undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound and is listed in critical condition, according to the release. Authorities have not released where on her body or how many times the victim was shot.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently seeking Exom on charges of assault with the attempt to murder and felony firearms. Exom is a Niles resident, but his current location is unknown.

Exom is a 28-year-old African American male. He is 5’10”, approximately 210 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.

Exom was last seen fleeing the area of the shooting in a light blue 2004 Buick Park Avenue four-door sedan. The sheriff’s department says his Michigan license plate may be DCP-0878.

Police say that Exom should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information regarding this crime or with knowledge of Exom’s location is encouraged to contact the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office at (269) 983-7141 or detectives@berriencounty.org.
