Police searching for man responsible for Dowagiac bank robbery

Update: The Dowagiac Police Department has released stills from bank security footage of the suspect, which have been added to the post.

IMG_2680 IMG_2684Local authorities are currently searching for the whereabouts of the person responsible for holding up a Dowagiac bank Thursday morning.

According to police, a man entered the Dowagiac Area Federal Credit Union, located at 473 E. Division St., at around 10:23 a.m., where he proceeded to threaten a bank teller with a black handgun, demanding and receiving an undetermined amount of money. After taking the cash, he proceeded to flee in an unknown direction away from the premises.

Police say the suspect is a black male, approximately in his 20s or 30s. He was wearing all black clothing at the time of the robbery, including a black sweatshirt and a baseball cap with yellow trim.

Authorities will release more information, including security camera footage, about the incident at a later time. Anyone with information about the suspect or the robbery are encouraged to contact police.

The Dowagiac school district has issued an external lockdown on its buildings within the city while police look for the suspect.
