Tigers beat Chieftains; Bucks top Shamrocks

BENTON HARBOR — Host Benton Harbor and Buchanan advanced to the Class B District finals Friday night.

The Tigers held off a late charge by Dowagiac to win 78-74, while the Bucks defeated Berrien Springs 74-64 behind a career-high 36 points for Tyler Flynn.

Dowagiac erased a double-digit second half lead in the final three minutes of its game against Benton Harbor Wednesday night.

The Tigers (16-6) turned the ball over numerous times, but made enough free throws to keep the Chieftains (16-5) at bay.

Benton Harbor led 17-16 after one quarter and outscored Dowagiac 15-4 in the final half of the second half, including four points in the final four seconds to open up a 38-27 halftime advantage.

The lead Tigers increased their advantage to 57-40 entering the fourth quarter and were still ahead by double digits at the four minute mark.

Dowagiac was able to whittle away at the lead, cutting it to 76-74 with two-tenths of a seconds remaining.

A pair of free throws Roy Anderson sealed the Benton Harbor victory.

Jaton Gunn and Malik Hall both had 24 points for the Tigers.

Brandon Winchester-Jones led Dowagiac and all scorers with 26 points. Harry Reed added 20 for the Chieftains.

Despite letting several leads slip away, Buchanan was able to fend off the Berrien Springs upset bid.

Twice in the first half, the Shamrocks erased seven-point deficits, but still trailed 34-31 at the half.

The Bucks led 46-44 heading into the fourth quarter where both team erupted offensively.

Buchanan poured in 28, while the Shamrocks scored 20.

Beside Flynn’s career night, the Bucks also got 12 points from Dustin Grey.

Robert Johnson scored 24 for the Shamrocks and Bo Taylor 11.
