The Capt. Samuel Felt Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) named Edwardburg’s Alex Freshour as its 2015 Good Citizen at its regular monthly meeting at the Cass District Library Monday.

The DAR also presented Deborah Pike and Paulette Rybarksi of Decatur with its Community Service Award. Pike and Rybarski, who are sisters, started the annual Decatur Holiday Arts and Craft Show more than 30 years ago.

The Griner family of Newberg Township was honored with the National Conservation Award. Daryl Griner is the fifth generation owner of the 150-year-old farm. He and his mother Lorraine accepted the award.

Freshour was one of seven area students named DAR Good Citizens at the December meeting.

He was chosen by Edwardsburg High School. Freshour had to provide a transcript of his grades from high school, two letters of recommendation, a detailed list of high school activities, volunteer service and extracurricular activities.

Freshour also had to write an original essay of no more than 500 words on the topic “Our American heritage and our responsibilities for preserving it.”

Frehour said he has a “strong desire” to attend a Christian college and pursue elementary education and become a teacher, but has not chosen a school.

“There is also a part of me, that later down the line might look into becoming a pastor or an administrator in a school,” he said.
