An excavator being hauled by a semi hit the US 12 bridge where it crosses South 11th Street in Niles Thursday morning.

An excavator being hauled on the back of a flat-bed semi truck hit the U.S. 12 bridge where it crosses South 11th Street in Niles around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

No injuries were reported by police.

South 11th Street near the U.S. 12 bridge is closed as police and other emergency personnel work to get the excavator removed. A portion of eastbound U.S. 12 where it crosses the bridge is also closed.

Lt. Trent Babcock, of the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, said they are waiting for a structural engineer from the Michigan Department of Transportation to inspect the bridge for damage.

If the bridge is found to be safe, Babcock said they would work to remove the excavator and re-open traffic.

The excavator belongs to Michigan Rental. It was heading north on South 11th Street when the arm of the excavator hit the bridge, which has a 13-foot-9-inch clearance.
