Niles mulls installing Main Street Bridge camera

There is a lot of interest in the project to replace the Main Street Bridge in Niles.

So much so that the city is looking into the possibility of installing a web-camera that could provide live footage of the construction.

“Over the last several months and then twice this past weekend I’ve got comments from people that have said, ‘It sure would’ve been nice to have a bridge cam,’” said Mayor Mike McCauslin at Monday’s regular council meeting.

While it is too late to get a camera up for the demolition portion of the project — that is nearly complete — McCauslin said it might be possible to have one up in time for when the new bridge is being built.

“I think that would be something neat to watch and see,” he said.

City Administrator Ric Huff said the camera would likely be installed on the Riverfront Park Amphitheater, located on the north side of the bridge.

That would mean gaining access to utility lines buried under the frozen ground, an obstacle Huff said the city would have to overcome.

If the project goes forward, Huff said people could access a camera feed that would refresh every 30 seconds or so through the city’s website.

Huff said he would know more about the feasibility of installing a bridge camera within the next two weeks.

The $10.6 million MDOT project to replace the bridge began in October and is scheduled to be completed sometime in November.
