Bobcats’ Szilagyi earns Bronze medal

GRAND LEDGE — Brandywine senior Jakob Szilagyi earned a bronze medal after reaching the quarterfinals of the Division 4 Boys State Bowling Tournament at Royal Scot Saturday.

Szilagyi defeated Bailey Budnick of Rogers City in the opening match of the championship round 384-383.

He was defeated by Christian O’Callaghan of Riverview Gabriel Richard 407-345 in the quarterfinals.

Szilagyi earned the 16th and final qualifying spot after the morning round of competition. He finished with a three-game total of 1,182 pins.

Szilagyi also helped the Brandywine boys bowling team advance to the top eight where it defeated top-seeded St. Charles 1,399-1,295 in the first round.

The Bobcats were then eliminated in the quarterfinals by Bad Axe 1,260-1,123.

The Brandywine girls team failed to advance out of the Friday morning qualifying block.

In the Division 2 finals at Century Lanes in Waterford, Niles failed to advance out of the morning qualifying block.

The Vikings did not have an individual qualifier advance out of the Saturday morning qualifying matches.
