Niles man dies in head-on crash on US-12

A Niles man died and another was injured after a head on-collision on US-12 near Bell Road in Niles Friday morning.

Patrick Hollis, 33, of Niles was pronounced dead at Lakeland Hospital, according to the Michigan State Police Niles Post.

The driver of the other vehicle, Ray Marshall, 22, of Niles, was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the accident occurred at around 8:10 a.m. when one vehicle crossed the center line and hit the other head-on about a quarter mile south of Bell Road on US-12. Police are still investigating to determine which vehicle crossed the center line.

Marshall, who had to be extricated from his vehicle, was wearing a seatbelt. Hollis was not wearing a seatbelt, according to police.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected at this time.

The crash remains under investigation.

Cass County Sheriff’s deputies, Niles Township Fire and Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
