Mike Morrison did not get exactly what he wanted, but he might have gotten the next best thing.

The voice of Brandywine sports will have the opportunity to announce at least five games this year for the South Bend Cubs.

Morrison, a longtime public address announcer at Brandywine High School games, was one of 10 finalists for the job of PA announcer for the Class-A minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

Morrison did not get the job — it went to WSBT radio’s Jon Thompson — but he did get the chance to serve as Thompson’s fill-in for the 2015 season.

“This opportunity wasn’t given to anyone else that went into the final interview, which is pretty cool in my opinion,” Morrison said.

Morrison said he’s been guaranteed at least five games to announce, in addition to any fill-in appearances. The dates are April 20, May 2, May 6, May 14 and Aug. 8.

During the hiring process, finalists filmed an audition video that was placed on YouTube and people were encouraged to vote for, or “like,” their favorite video.

Morrison’s video received the most number of “likes.”

The number of “likes” was just one of several factors the South Bend Cubs used in determining whom to hire.

Initially, Morrison said he was disappointed to learn he wasn’t chosen as the next PA announcer, especially after learning his video got the most “likes.”

“They got a really good person for the job, so for me to be a fill in for JT — I take it as more of a positive than a negative,” he said. “With me winning the popular vote it is a consolation prize if you want to call it that. The community, my family and friends all came through for me by voting.”

Thompson is the host of “JT in the Morning” on News and Sports Radio 96.1 FM and 960 AM WSBT and has hosted the Michiana morning show for nearly 40 years.

He is also the announcer for the Fighting Irish Marching Band of the University of Notre Dame. In his spare time, Thompson is a professional baseball umpire and has officiated for nearly 25 years including games played at Four Winds Field.
