Pizza Hut hosts fundraiser for DASAS

Patrons of the Dowagiac Pizza Hut Wednesday night will be able to enjoy more than just a tasty slice of cheesy Italian cuisine — they’ll also enjoy giving back to their community.

From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. that evening, the local chain will be donating 10 percent of total sales during that period to the tri-county Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services organization. Several representatives will be at the restaurant throughout dinner, providing information and answering questions.

It’s one of several mini-fundraisers that the organization hopes to hold throughout the year, in partnership with local restaurants, said DASAS Executive Director Kimberly Kramer.

“We’re looking to host these events at various times throughout the year to bring some additional awareness and funding to the organization,” Kramer said. “We used to only have one big fundraiser a year, the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. However, we’re finding that we need additional support as well.”

DASAS teamed up with Dowagiac’s Wounded Minnow Saloon in January for a similar evening of giving. The downtown restaurant gave the nonprofit organization a 20 percent cut of all customer bills during the evening of Jan. 19, generating $600 for the Three Rivers-based entity, Kramer said.

“It’s not a huge amount, but every little bit counts,” she said.

When the DASAS approached Pizza Hut about hosting another “dine for dollars” event, the management happily agreed. By working with a pizza place versus a traditional sit-down restaurant, Kramer hopes they can reach a different set of residents, some of whom may be survivors of domestic or sexual violence or are in need of the organization’s services, she said.

“Domestic violence really affects teens, so having a presence where kids hang out will help us out a lot,” she said.

Founded in St. Joseph County in 1984, DASAS provides counseling, shelter and other services to victims and survivors of domestic and sexual assaults to residents of Cass, St. Joseph and Van Buren counties. Locally, the organization has an office in Dowagiac, and has a representative in the courthouse, Kramer said.

“A lot of people think we just have the shelter [in Three Rivers], but we have a lot more services than that,” Kramer said. “We have more services in Cass County than anywhere else at the moment.”

Kramer said the organization is looking to host another dinner in April, which is National Sexual Assault Awareness month.
