When it comes to cutting down on utility bills, every single penny saved on daily energy usage eventually adds up when it comes time to write that check the end of the month.

Next week, the City of Dowagiac and representatives with Efficiency United will present the community with the opportunity to do just that, during their first Energy Savings sales event of the New Year. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 9-11 inside city hall, local residents will be able to purchase energy efficient light bulbs, night lights, shower heads and other fixtures at deeply discounted prices.

Among the items for sale are:

• Surge protector smart power strip: $8 (limit 2)

• High-efficiency showerhead: $1

• High-efficiency shower wand & hose: $4

• LED night light: $1 (limit 4)

• Water savings kit: $6 (limit 1)

The city and Efficiency United have been running the joint project since 2013, typically holding at least two events every year, said Sue Watson, administrative assistant with the city. Several representatives with the organization will be on hand during the three-day sale.

“It’s an easy way for residents to learn about energy optimization,” Watson said. “If residents have any questions about other energy saving options, the [employees] can answer them or forward them to someone who can.”

Before the city teamed with Efficiency United as part of their energy optimization program, they held similar events throughout the year, distributing free light bulbs to residents. While this giveaway has been replaced by a sale, Efficiency United presents a wider assortment of options for customers, Watson said.

“They’ll be able to recoup the money they spent in no time at all,” she said.

The event has become something that many residents look forward to throughout the year, with several people asking when it will take place this year over the last several weeks, Watson said.

In addition to helping residents save money on their bills, the energy efficient products will also benefit the city. As part of the partnership with Efficiency United, the city is required to reach certain efficiency power goals every year.

“The products they purchase will help us reach our goals,” Watson said. “It’s a win-win for everyone.”
