Galien River County Park in New Buffalo Township has been recognized with two awards, according to the county’s Parks and Recreation Commission.

The Michigan Recreation and Park Association, a statewide organization recognized the park at their annual conference on Feb. 12 with a Park Design award.

Also, the Great Lakes Parks Training Institute awarded the park with the “Facility and Recreation Program Award.” The Great Lakes Parks Training Institute is represented by states around the Great Lakes including Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. The Great Lakes Parks Training Institute award is given to park facilities that “represent the cutting edge of the park and recreation profession in the United States.”

“Galien River County Park has quickly become a regional attraction and an integral part of Berrien County. It will enhance the areas quality of life and provide recreation, outdoor education and economic opportunities in a truly unique setting,” said Dick Schinkel, Berrien County Parks Commission chairman. “For the park to be recognized by the MRPA and a regional organization from neighboring states is truly outstanding.”

Highlights of the park include a 300-foot tree canopy walkway with one of a kind views of the Galien River Valley from over five stories high above the marsh environment; a 600-foot boardwalk through the marsh leading to the edge of the Galien River; a wonderful fishing and viewing platform near the Galien River; benches along the boardwalk are strategically placed to observe the sights and sounds of this special marsh environment; and barrier-free hard surface walking trails are also available with ample parking with barrier free spaces.

Funding for these improvements included a $500,000 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant, $300,000 from The Pokagon Fund, and funding from the county general fund and parks millage.
