What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library will offer the following free events and activities this week. A library card is not needed to participate in any of the programs. Tuesday, March 3

• 2 p.m. — Special Edition: Craft Day and Dance Party

All ages and abilities are welcome.

• 4:30 to 8 p.m. — VITA (tax prep assistance) program

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a service available to households that made $52,000 or less in 2014. Call 211 to schedule your appointment.

• 6 p.m. — Niles Community Gardens information and signup

NCG members will provide information about the gardens and offer help to anyone interested in joining a garden this summer. Gardeners work together to raise fresh vegetables and fruit. Participants may also sign up for individual garden plots. Excess produce is shared with the larger community. Both experienced gardeners and novices are welcome.

 

Wednesday, March 4

• Multiple times – Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months-3 years) at 10 a.m., Storytime at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and Squigglers (3-5 years) at 11 a.m..

• 5 p.m. — Writing Group

The Writing Group is a place for passionate writers to share their ideas and experiences with writing of all types with other passionate writers. All participants will have a chance to share their work and receive constructive criticism and tips for their writing.

 

Thursday, March 5

• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

• 1 to 4 p.m. — American Mahjong

Volunteers are available weekly to teach you how to play.

• 4 to 7 p.m. — Chess Tournament

The Niles District Library Chess Club invites everyone to the first tournament of 2015. Entry into this tournament is free for all and only a USCF membership is required. All players have to keep “score” of their games and follow the USCF tournament rules.

• 4 p.m. — Teen Game Night

Ages 13-17 are invited to join us for 2 hours of video games, card games, board games, and ping pong.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Knitting group

 

Friday, March 6

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stitches (drop-in knitting group)

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA)

The SCA is a practical history society, recreating the arts and skills of pre-17th century Europe. This particular weekly gathering is a ‘practice,’ and everyone is welcome. You will have the opportunity to learn and practice ancient arts and skills — fighting, calligraphy, cooking, armoring, metalworking, carpentry, and needlework (to name just a few) — within an all-ages social group. The SCA is a great place to make friends and learn transferable skills. Wearing “garb” is optional.

 

Saturday, March 7

• 10 a.m. to noon — Friends Book Sale

All books are 10 cents this month.

• 10 a.m. — Chess Club

• 10 a.m. — Myasthenia Gravis Support

Join fellow researchers for conversation, assistance, and celebration each month on the first Saturday. Each month also features a brief topical discussion this month’s subject is “Coats of Arms.”
