What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library will offer the following free events and activities this week. A library card is not needed to participate in any program. For more information, call (269) 683-8545 ext. 117 or visit the Facebook page or nileslibrary.com.

 

Monday, Feb. 23

• 10 a.m. — Special Edition Movie Day: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

The popcorn will be hot and waiting. Everyone is welcome.

• 4 to 7 p.m. — Game Day for Adults

 

Tuesday, Feb. 24

• 4:30 to 8 p.m. — VITA (tax prep assistance) program

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a service available to households that made $52,000 or less in 2014. Call 211 to schedule an appointment.

• 6:30 p.m. — Olive Branch Book Club (meets at Massimo’s Backside Bar)

• 6:30 p.m. — Pajama Storytime

This story time is for the entire family. It features stories, the color song, magic box, a song with instruments and a coloring sheet to take home. There will also be a craft after story time. Wearing pajamas is encouraged.

 

Wednesday, Feb. 25

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., Squigglers (18 months-3 years) at 10 a.m., Storytime at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and Squigglers (3-5 years) at 11 a.m.

 

Thursday, Feb. 26

• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Story time

• 1 to 4 p.m. — American Mahjong

Volunteers are available weekly to teach people how to play Mahjong. Also, meet friends to play other card or table games in the Community Room.

• 4-7 p.m. — Chess Tournament

The Niles District Library Chess Club is hosting the first tournament of 2015. Entry into this tournament is free for all and only a USCF membership is required. All players have to keep “score” of their games and follow the USCF tournament rules.

• 4 p.m. — Teen Book Club

The Teen Book Club for ages 12 to 19 will discuss Raina Telemeiger’s graphic novel “Drama” in the Classroom.

• 4 p.m. — Tween Book Club

Kids ages 8 to 12 are encouraged to join staff for games, book discussion, and snacks in the classroom. The group will meet to discuss “The Watsons Go To Birmingham” by Christopher Paul Curtis.

• 4:30 p.m. — Teen Advisory Council

Those interested in working on the library’s community service project, choosing young adult books, and creating teen programming should join others meeting in the classroom.

• 6 p.m. — Niles Community Gardens sign-up

NCG members will provide information about the gardens and offer help to anyone interested in joining a garden this summer. Gardeners work together to raise fresh vegetables and fruit. Participants may also sign up for individual garden plots. Excess produce is shared with the larger community. Both experienced gardeners and novices are welcome.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Knitting

 

Friday, Feb. 27

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stitches (drop-in knitting group)

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA)

Everyone is welcome to bring their handwork or just come see others making cool things, and watch the swordfighting practice. Everyone is welcome, and no special costumes are needed.

 

Saturday, Feb. 28

• 10 a.m. to noon — Rep. Pagel open office hours

• 11 a.m. — If I Ran the Circus

Enter the spotlight under the big top, with this circus themed Seussibration! The library will have face painting, circus food, crafts and games in the Youth Services Department.

• 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. — VITA (tax prep assistance) program

• 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — A Taste of Soul: Heritage Recipe Cook-off

This is an exciting opportunity to sample some of the best soul food in the area, or to share that special family recipe with an appreciative crowd. Co-hosted by the Niles chapter of the NAACP and the Niles District Library, the library invites everyone to taste and vote for their favorites.
