Niles advances 14 wrestlers to regionals

VICKSBURG — For the Niles wrestling team, the Division 2 Individual Wrestling Tournament will be a day that could have a major impact on its chances of winning a team championship.

While the Vikings advances all 14 of its wrestlers to Saturday’s regional at Eaton Rapids, it cost Niles senior Sean Craig, who suffered a broken collarbone in the process.

The Vikings had four individual champions as Andrew Flick, Josh Dayhuff, Brenden Hall and Fred Kemp all captured titles.

Flick (21-3) pinned Evan Griffioen of Three Rivers to take the 103-pound title, while Dayhuff (36-4) defeated Battle Creek Harper Creek’s Mitch Coon to claim the 112-pound championship.

Hall (32-7) won a decision over Vicksburg’s Kaleb Lewis at 125-pounds, while Kemp (34-8) defeated Sturgis’ Luke Carver for the 160-pound crown.

Niles also had a trio of runners-up, five third place finishers and two fourth place efforts.

Edwardsburg advanced Michael Higley (112), Hunter Vargo (125) and Dustin Vires (135).
