For most of her high school basketball career you wouldn’t call Edwardsburg senior Katelynn Rogers a scoring threat.

A pass to a teammate in better scoring position would usually be the scouting report on Rogers.

But a role reversal took place for Rogers against Berrien Springs last Friday.

The 5-foot-10 center scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Eddies past the Shamrocks, 53-41.

What made the accomplishment even greater was that Rogers shined in front of a great homecoming crowd at Edwardsburg High School.

Only one more home game remains for Rogers.

“It was incredible,” said Rogers about her night. “I was happy, being it’s my senior year, that I could have a great game at home.

“Everybody thinks that when I have the ball I’m going to pass it. But I ended up stepping up (against Berrien Springs) and hitting a few shots.”

Edwardsburg girls basketball coach Nicole Cartwright wasn’t surprised that Rogers was effective offensively. Rogers has been on the varsity for four years and started three of those years.

“Katelynn is capable of that every night,” said Cartwright. “She’s usually a distributor. You usually don’t see her take that many shots. She’s starting to shoot more, which is what we need this year.”

Rogers was averaging just under double figures as a scorer entering the Berrien Springs game.

“My shot has improved the most,” Rogers said about her development as a basketball player. “I wasn’t as consistent with my shooting the last few years. Now, I’ve become more consistent.”

Rogers wasn’t happy about just making one 3-pointer against the Shamrocks. She has made four 3-pointers in two games this season.

“I had a little bit of an off night shooting 3s,” she said. “I can shoot.”

Rogers didn’t just hurt the Shamrocks with her offense. She also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and blocked three shots.

“I was proud of my overall game,” Rogers said. “I was all over the floor. I had some blocked shots, played good defense, hit some shots and was getting the ball where it needed to be.”

Rogers put the ball in the hole at the most critical time against Berrien Springs. she stepped to the free-throw line and made 2-of-3 to give the Eddies a 44-38 lead with 5:24 left in the game. The Shamrocks had trailed by as many as 11 points in the third quarter.

It was a moment where Rogers, who is one of three team captains along with Alise Markel and Savannah Dixon, played like a team leader.

“I have to be a team leader out there on the floor and make sure everyone knows what they’re doing and where they need to be,” Rogers said. “ Also, I have to make sure my teammates know what coach wants.”

Cartwright appreciates the contributions that Rogers has made to the girls basketball program.

“She provides all the little things, like the leadership,” Cartwright said. “This kid has got it.”
