The Ferry Street Resource Center has received a state grant that will allow it to offer a support group for people with diabetes.

Sue Polishuk, director, said the non-profit center received a grant through the Michigan Department of Health for a 12-week session.

The center is in the process of finding people interested in joining the support group.

“We have not yet set a start date because we want to see how many people we have and what their schedules allow,” Polishuk said. “When we get a group of interested people we will decide on a date, day and time.”

The group is for people who want to learn more about how to control diabetes, a metabolic disease that results in too much sugar in the blood, or high blood glucose.

The sessions will provide the following:

• Information about the effects of diabetes

• How to choose the right foods

• How light exercise can be beneficial

• Delicious recipes

• An opportunity to share ideas

• Support from others with diabetes

• Testing equipment

Those interested should contact Polishuk by phone at (269) 687-9860.
