Howard wins Wolverine Conference championship

VICKSBURG — Senior Tristan Howard brought home a Wolverine Conference Wrestling Tournament championship for Dowagiac Saturday.

Howard, who was third last year, captured the 285-pound title with a 4-3 decision over Three Rivers’ Dallas Recker in the title bout.

Allegan won its 10th consecutive conference championship as it edged Edwardsbug 187-170.

Dowagiac finished seventh Saturday and ended up tied for sixth in the final standings.

The Tigers have won 136 consecutive Wolverine duals and have not lost a conference match since 1999.

On Saturday, Allegan had four individual champions.

Edwardsburg, which was second in the final standings, finished with five individual champions as Michael Higley (112), Nick Bradley (119), Hunter Vargo (125), Dustin Vires (140) and Lucas Marks (145) won titles.

Howard pinned Andy Antal of Vicksburg in nine seconds to open the tournament and then pinned Robert Barringer of South Haven in 46 seconds to reach the finals.

The Chieftains’ Gage Williams at 112-pounds and Aubrey Huston at 145 both finished third.
