Dowagiac looking for better finish

The Dowagiac wrestling team is looking for a much improved finish at the Wolverine Conference Tournament at Vicksburg Saturday.

The Chieftains finished last in 2013, but head coach Matt Alward is much more optimistic about this year’s chances.

“We are looking to finish top five at the conference meet this weekend,” he said.

Dowagiac will be led into action by senior Tristan Howard, who finished third last season.

Howard is currently 24-3 heading into tonight’s non-conference match at Schoolcraft with the Eagles and Williamston.

Dowagiac is 11-11 on the year.

Howard is Dowagiac’s only returning wrestler who placed in the top four in 2013.

Also looking to fare well at Saturday’s tournament, which begins at 10 a.m., are Aubrey Huston (23-7), Shawn Sirk (11-5), Caleb Sands (19-10) and Tom Smith (13-8).

Perennial Wolverine Conference power Allegan is the defending champion.

The Tigers outdistanced runner-up Otsego 263-216 at last year’s meet.

Vicksburg was third, Berrien Springs fourth and Edwardsburg fifth.

The Eddies return placers Michael Higley (103), Keathly Marks (119) and Dustin Vires (125).
