The Super Bowl Sunday snow event led to cancelations throughout Berrien and Cass counties and left people digging out from more than a foot of snow in some areas.

Niles, Brandywine and Buchanan school districts were closed Monday, while Niles Dial-A-Ride public transportation also canceled its services Monday due to snowy conditions.

The student art show at Fernwood scheduled for Sunday was postponed to the following Sunday because of the snow.

Monday’s Niles school board meeting was also canceled.

Amounts ranging from 8 to 15 inches of snow fell from Saturday through Monday morning, according to observations reported by the National Weather Service of Northern Indiana.

LaPorte, Indiana, was one of the hardest hit areas with people digging out of more than 20 inches of snow.

A local weather observer in Niles measured 14.2 inches of snow, according to Lonnie Fisher, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service of Northern Indiana.

Buchanan reported 15 inches of snow as of 8:33 a.m. Monday morning. A measurement of 14.2 inches of snow was reported in Dowagiac.

South Bend reported nearly 16 inches of snow, illustrating how totals varied across the Michiana area.

“It won’t be the top event, but it will be in the upper group in terms of impact,” Fisher said.

From a historical perspective, this weekend’s event compares with a blizzard that blew into the area Feb. 1 in 2011. That storm hit northern Indiana and southwest Michigan with 8 to 16 inches of snow and wind gusts to 55 miles per hour, depending on the area.
