The former police complex on South 11th Street in Niles was razed over the weekend. The building that once housed Michigan State Police Post was erected in the late 1930s.

After standing for more than 60 years, the building that was once home to the Michigan State Police Niles Post on South 11th Street was torn down last week.

Niles historian Donna Ochenryder said the structure was built in the late 1930s using money from the Works Progress Administration, a federal program that provided jobs and income to people during the Great Depression. The former public safety building on Sycamore Street, which was torn down last year, and Eastside Connections School, which remains standing, were also built at the same time using WPA money.

Commander Mike Dawson, of the Michigan State Police Niles Post, said he worked for 14 years in the old MSP building, which was located at the corner of South 11th Street and Lambert Street.

He said the post was moved to the Niles Law Enforcement Complex on Silverbrook Avenue in 2003.

“I sent an email out (Thursday) with some pictures of it coming down and most people said it is sad because there’s a lot of good memories people had from working there,” he said. “It is sad to see it falling down.”

The building was home to several businesses after the MSP Niles Post moved out, including most recently Victory Lane.

BR Associates owns the property and the Lohn John Silvers restaurant immediately to the south.

Bob Ruckriegel, chairman of BR Associates, said the company plans to clean up the property and open it up for someone to buy for redevelopment.
