For Brandywine senior Andrew Duckett, signing a national letter of intent to play for Eastern Michigan University Wednesday is a dream come true.

Duckett verbally committed to the Eagles earlier this week, but has to wait until Wednesday, National Signing Day, to put his name on the dotted line.

“I have such a love for the game,” Duckett said. “I never want to stop playing it. I mean, I obviously have to sometime, but playing football in college is something I have always wanted to do.

“I wasn’t always sure at what level, but I worked really hard to try and make it to the highest level that I could.”

Duckett chose Eastern because it is going to give him an opportunity to play quarterback.

“It was a fairly easy decision for me because I just love everything about it,” he said. “The coaches are awesome people who are super passionate about what they are doing. It is really a family deal over there. It is going to be a great thing to be a part of.”

Duckett also noted that Eastern Michigan’s facilities and campus played a role in his selection of the Eagles.

Last fall, Duckett wrapped up one of the most successful careers in Brandywine football history.

The senior quarterback, a four-year starter, broke nearly every record in the book while leading the Bobcats to a 28-11 record and three consecutive appearances in the post season.

Duckett, who is 6-foot-2, 185-pounds, set records for most touchdowns in a single game (4), single season (18) and career (48). As a senior, he ran for more than 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns while throwing for 1,015 yards and 18 touchdowns.

For his career, Duckett ran for 2,060 yards and 23 touchdowns and threw for 2,865 yards.

The senior also played defense for Brandywine last season and intercepted three passes, two of which he returned for touchdowns.

A trip to Eastern Michigan’s football camp may have sealed the deal for Duckett.

“After camp, I still wasn’t sure I was going to have the opportunity to go there, but they kept in touch with me. That was the first time I was every there. I kind of fell in love with it then.”

He had offers from Valpairaso University and Concordia.

Duckett is a three-sport standout for the Bobcats.

He is a member of the basketball team, which is 8-3 heading into tonight’s showdown with rival Buchanan.

He is a state champion in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (39.17) and was fourth at the state finals in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.16).

In the classroom, Duckett has a grade point average of 3.7.

He is the son of Mike and Barb Duckett.
